Lok Bhavan, Goa: Stories Behind the People’s House

Formerly known as Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor of Goa, Lok Bhavan is among the oldest such residences in India. But its story begins long before modern governance.

From Palácio do Cabo to Lok Bhavan

The site originally housed the Palácio do Cabo, built during the Portuguese era in the 16th century. Its strategic location allowed clear views of the Arabian Sea, making it a crucial fort-palace during colonial times. Cannons, watch points, and defensive structures still silently mark this past.

Over the years, as Goa moved through colonisation, liberation, and statehood, the space evolved, not just architecturally, but symbolically.

In a significant shift, Raj Bhavan was renamed Lok Bhavan, meaning “The People’s House”. The change wasn’t just in name. It reflected an intention to open up a space that had long remained behind gates, allowing citizens to step in, explore, and connect with its stories.
