Trail Overview

Of all the villages we have traversed and marked with our footprints and inquisitiveness, Curdi is by far the most mysterious and beautiful of them all with a story like none other. Curdi perhaps hasn't made its mark on the global map, but for Goa it's a prized jewel, owing to its rich history full of kings and its hallmark sacrifice for the Salaulim Dam, independent Goa's first major project that took shape under liberated Goa's first Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar in 1965. Curdi bore the brunt and submerged completely under water, which resulted in the relocation of about 400 villagers.

The most fascinating part of Curdi's tale though, is its resurfacing that happens every summer from April to June, when the water dries up due to the heat. During this time, the village's residents travel back, back in time to walk through the ruins of the houses they left, to adore their Tulasi and crosses they prayed to. Houses are now ruins and bare walls, however the temple has survived, and with some temporary refurbishments, the villages get together for the festival celebrations and memories of the time gone by.
